h/t John Gruber:
Hundreds of Bounty Hunters Had Access to AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint Customer Location Data for Years
…Around 250 bounty hunters and related businesses had access to AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint customer location data, with one bail bond firm using the phone location service more than 18,000 times, and others using it thousands or tens of thousands of times, according to internal documents obtained by Motherboard from a company called CerCareOne, a now-defunct location data seller that operated until 2017. The documents list not only the companies that had access to the data, but specific phone numbers that were pinged by those companies.
In some cases, the data sold is more sensitive than that offered by the service used by Motherboard last month, which estimated a location based on the cell phone towers that a phone connected to. CerCareOne sold cell phone tower data, but also sold highly sensitive and accurate GPS data to bounty hunters; an unprecedented move that means users could locate someone so accurately so as to see where they are inside a building. This company operated in near-total secrecy for over 5 years by making its customers agree to “keep the existence of cercareone.com confidential,” according to a terms of use document obtained by Motherboard….
If you’ve done nothing wrong, you’ve got nothing to worry about, right?

He has loudly signaled that he isn’t willing to enforce Roe and its progeny. This is a declaration of war on Roe by Kavanaugh.— Mark Joseph Stern (@mjs_DC) February 8, 2019
It’s pretty clear why Roberts voted with the liberals here. Louisiana and the 5th Circuit were attempting to overrule the Supreme Court’s 2016 Whole Woman’s Health decision. Roberts may yet overrule WWH—but he isn’t willing to do so on an emergency appeal.

Trump and the GOP are intent on destroying women’s right to choose. Kavanaugh is intent on overturning Roe. That’s his mission and the GOP picked him for that express purpose, no matter how much he ignores stare decisis and decades of precedence.
He’s not a jurist. He’s a saboteur of the judicial process to legislate from the bench - he’s pushing a policy outcome that would ignore decades of legal rulings, and supreme court decisions that have sound foundation.
Roberts couldn’t go down that route, because the court just ruled on this very issue a few years ago, and it would reveal the right wingers on the bench to be pure partisan hacks who don’t care about the rule of law, precedent, or the process to legislate from the bench.
As with most things, the GOP projects like IMAX when they complain about the judicial activists, they’re just complaining that the activists aren’t doing the right wing bidding.

Was there any way for the Dems to keep Kavanaugh off the court by pursuing his financial irregularities and his perjury during the pre-Ford hearings? It was the Trump’s handling of the Ford hearings that really solidified the Republican Senate and may have doomed some Democratic Senators in the November election.

If things had stayed focused on his financial dealings, it might have gotten too rough for him, because he wasn’t able to explain the sudden payoff of his debts. How’s that pellet stove work in the deep freeze?
As long as the electrics aren’t out, like normal.
The Reverend William J Barber has an oped in WaPo:
…Scapegoating politicians who are caught in the act of interpersonal racism will not address the fundamental issue of systemic racism. We have to talk about policy. But we also have to talk about trust and power. If white people in political leadership are truly repentant, they will listen to black and other marginalized people in our society. They will confess that they have sinned and demonstrate their willingness to listen and learn by following and supporting the leadership of others. To confess past mistakes while continuing to insist that you are still best suited to lead because of your experience is itself a subtle form of white supremacy.
At the same time, we cannot allow political enemies of Virginia’s governor to call for his resignation over a photo when they continue themselves to vote for the policies of white supremacy. If anyone wants to call for the governor’s resignation, they should also call for the resignation of anyone who has supported racist voter suppression or policies that have a disparate impact on communities of color…
…In our present moral crisis, we must remember that real repentance is possible — and it looks like working together to build the multiethnic democracy we’ve never yet been.
Republicans don’t repent—they’ll work to see that their racist agenda is entrenched—gerrymandering, excessive police authority, blocking health care reform, wars of plunder, destroying gun laws, stripping workers’ rights, environmental destruction, voting rights.
I hope that Northam will work with the Rev Barber & and POC in VA to start the healing process, and set an example for the US to finally talk about the original sin of slavery.

Putting alcohol in ice cream isn’t a new thing; Alton Brown touted adding small amounts of booze (such as vodka, since it’s as clear, odorless, and tasteless as booze can be, short of PGA) for years in the original run of Good Eats to homemade ice cream/sherbet recipes because it helps make the ice crystals finer/smaller when it fully sets, making it smoother on the palate.

It has advantages. It’s hopper-fed, so there’s a constant burn rate rather than relying on parts burning away at unpredictable rates.
Technical question: could the House Dems open an investigation into Kavanaugh’s financial irregularities and use that as a possible reason for impeachment? Or does judicial impeachment usually require violations while serving in the current position?

Okay, but are the pellets cheaper than cured hardwood for actual heat output? The beauty of an efficient hardwood stove is that you can gauge your wood use based on predicted temperatures, load it up and leave it alone.

re: #122 Joe Bacon 🌹
Remember that the House impeached Bill Clinton over lying about a stained blue dress. And as Republicans said at the time anything can be an impeachable offense as long as 218 Representatives vote for it. And that means anything—farting, picking your nose, singing off key even telling a dirty joke…
But Clinton’s impeachment was over something that happened while he was President; could Kavanaugh be impeached for an illegal(unethical?) action before he was appointed to the Supreme Court?

Republicans made it clear during Clinton’s impeachment that it does not matter. Remember they said that if Hillary had been elected they would have impeached her over Uranium 1, Benghazi and the Clinton Foundation!
re: #118 Hecuba’s daughter
Technical question: could the House Dems open an investigation into Kavanaugh’s financial irregularities and use that as a possible reason for impeachment? Or does judicial impeachment usually require violations while serving in the current position?
The House can impeach for any reason it pleases, and the Senate can remove from office similarly.
So the only relevant point here is that there’s no way in hell to get 2/3 in the Senate for removing Kavanaugh.
Getting caught up on the day’s news regarding AMI and Bezos.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t blackmail illegal? Like, call in the cops and FBI and have someone arrested illegal? Is the Enquirer doing this because they got immunity from Muller, and think they’re untouchable?
I’m still trying to wrap my head around this. I know we live in insane times, but Jesus Christ; a large media corporation trying to blackmail one of the world’s richest men into shutting down said man’s newspaper investigations?
What the fuck am I missing here?

At the time, I always felt that Lewinsky-Gate was partially Republican payback for Watergate and driving Nixon from office. Still do, to be honest.

TNSTAIIYAR - There’s no such thing as “illegal” if you’re a Republican.

Partially? I always thought it was at least 90% payback for Nixon, and this was back when I still sometimes voted Republican
